Student Position: The Sehome Hill Arboretum Board

The Sehome Hill Arboretum Board of Governors is looking for a Western Washington University student who is willing to serve on the Board beginning September 2023 following appointment by the WWU President. Meetings are held on the third Thursday of every month (excluding June, July, August, and December) at 4:00 p.m., either on WWU’s campus or a City of Bellingham Building. There is a remote option. Meetings normally last one and one-half hours and members may need to spend an additional few hours of their time outside meetings for site visitations.

The Student At-Large position is generally a year-long or more term served as a full voting member on the Arboretum Board. As the student representative you are a full, voting participant in the proceedings and may offer opinions, perspective, or helpful information when necessary; you may also choose to take a more active role on the board, such as filling the Secretary position as recent student appointees have done. This position is a wonderful look into the proceedings of local community resource management, and a great addition to anyone's resume.

The Board works with the City and WWU in planning the use of capital, operating, and maintenance funds; coordinating maintenance, volunteer, research, and operation programs; and collaborating in the construction of a Long House being built on Arboretum property.

To apply, please provide a brief resume and a one-page narrative of why you are interested in serving and, if applicable, how your experience and qualifications can help the Board serve its mission. Please include in the package your expected graduation date (month and year), as well as your major area of study.

The three WWU members of the Board will review applications and recommend a student appointee to the Associated Students and the WWU President. We hope to have a student appointed to the Board before the beginning of the fall quarter, so please submit your information as soon as possible. If you have any questions, please contact the Arboretum Board Chair, John Tuxill at tuxillj@wwu.edu.
