Western Department of Biology Presents: Insect Collection Open House

Saturday, June 1, 2024, from 1:00pm-4:00pm in Biology Building Room 151 & 139 

This event is free, family friendly, and open to the public.

View many of the 75,000 specimens that make up the largest public insect collection in Western Washington!

You'll have the opportunity to see:

  • Northern Giant Hornets (aka “Murder Hornets”) from the first nest discovered in the U.S., right here in Whatcom County!
  • Beneficial insects in the region, including a variety of pollinators
  • Spectacular butterflies and beetles from the Pacific Northwest and far-flung places
  • Fossils of insects that lived 50 million years ago
  • Many of the giants among Pacific Northwest insects including Green Darner dragonfly, Giant water bug, Western Giant Ichneumon wasp, Giant Western Crane Fly, Antlions, Cicadas, and many more!

Parking is free and available in Lot C during the Open House. For disability parking, you can park in any lot in an available disability space or adjacent space as long as you display your valid state disability card. Lot 9G is closest to the Biology building. The Biology building has accessible restrooms on each floor. For information about where to find disability parking and to see accessible routes through campus, please visit the Accessibility map.
